Engaging with Dance in the Lockdown

As we enter yet another year in the pandemic, we recognize now more than ever the importance of staying engaged with dance and the joy that art sparks, even when we cannot gather. Throughout the pandemic, artists have done what they do best, found creative solutions to build community and further their artistic practices online. From classes to online festivals to discussions, art has continued to inspire hope in our community.

If you are craving a connection to dance in this lockdown, we have compiled a list of events, classes, conversations and more offered by artists close to the Nova Dance community.

Open Studio Programme

The National Ballet of Canada’s Open Space programme provides over 1,000 hours of free studio space each year at The Walter Carsen Centre to dance artists in Toronto. By sharing the National Ballet’s studios with the local dance community for one to two-week periods, Open Space aims to support a wide variety of dance genres and disciplines. Dance artists at any place in their career working on movement research, a new creation or further developing an existing work are all encouraged to apply. We encourage applications from IBPOC and LGBTQ+ artists.

JAE will also be hosting the Banboche Marketplace on Instagram Live for the first time ever on Jan 20 and 21.

Moving Meditation

Denise Fujiwara's Moving Meditation classes are back! Join Denise and take up the notion of the Tao; the path, a way of being that follows the flow of nature and reality. Fujiwara dance shares, “In dance, we love flow. The flow of a dancer belies the effort and skill it takes to create it. Flow can be difficult to achieve and sustain in tumult. It takes openness, attention to detail and a light playfulness both in our activities and in life. In this series of Moving Meditation, we will explore flow.” Join the class Sundays at 10:30am!
