It was really lovely to have Sam and Mel join us for a Discover Dance during the month of December. They each have an impressive list of accomplishments in terms of being professional dancers and artists but the core of what I took away from our conversation was that they are genuinely beautiful human beings.

They talked about their friendship and when they first met and how they became SaMel Tanz and their journey together.
For me, it’s always a pleasure to be in conversation with people who are constantly creating, even through times of Covid.
They are interested in discovering new ways to connect to one another and reach out to the community at large through their work. We watched their work Championess and it gave us the opportunity to talk about the power of women, the female body, and supporting women. The work had layers of meaning that each of us unravelled for ourselves and shared with the choreographers. There is so much joy in discussing work that displays strength and vulnerability all at the same time. It’s like seeing me, as a wholesome human, being displayed and discovered through dance.
I got to know Sam and Mel a little bit better through this discussion and I hope that they continue to do works that tell the story of not only their friendship but continue to explore what it means to have genuine human connections.
