Discover Dance with Brian Solomon
We continue to create rituals of gathering, meeting in the virtual space with our featured artists to consider their work, inspirations and journey through dance and life.
Sukruti Tirupattur reflects on Brian Solomon
For me, Discover Dance with Brian Solomon was to re-discover that being an artist is to be bold, to share our visions and stories our way, and to amp it up! As an artist trying to find my voice in a new country, spending time with Brian Solomon felt like hearing my own voice from the future -- wisdom and laughter included.
Brian’s work is the coming together of his heart, aesthetics, and wild imagination. In preparation for Discover Dance we watched excerpts of a vibrant spectrum of his work getting to know a little more of Brian through each one. I enjoyed watching his connection to nature, indigenous roots, and stark honesty come to life. Brian’s choreography for the track Mehcinut (by Jeremy Dutcher) was a myriad of bodies indulging in well-designed movement and holding space in the richness of saturated colours, which pulled and held my curiosity.
During our sessions together, Brian’s work sparked conversations that took thought provoking, interesting and intriguing turns: the moose and the chipmunk calls, language and the impact of borrowed words, shared histories, politics and art, personal stories, shaping of society, education, and Brian’s true satisfaction of working within community. The ease and clarity with which Brian engaged in these conversations was endearing.
Later when I did some internet sleuthing on Brian, I found this: “As a creator Solomon is passionate about helping people relearn the infinite possibilities of their 'forgotten bodies', and guiding them to take back the space those bodies occupy”. I would like to acknowledge Brian Solomon for kindling this pursuit in me. In my body -- an archive of history and a living access point to eternal wisdom.
