Engaging with Dance this Summer

Summer has arrived in Toronto and the city is alive with performances, events and a variety of art for the public to enjoy. Here are a few to check out this month:

1234 DanceArts Showcase

July 10, 7:00 pm EDT

918 Bathurst St

Hosted by Hollywood Jade, 1234 DanceArts Showcase is a multidisciplinary event to connect established/emerging artists and create an inclusive performance space for marginalize individuals. The showcase features performances and workshops by a variety of artists, including Nova Dance’s own Kieran Heralall, as well as an artisan market. Get your tickets from AIM Toronto.

Toronto Fringe Festival

July 6 – 17

Each July, the Toronto Fringe Festival welcomes approximately 140 companies from around Canada and the world to our 30+ theatre venues in downtown Toronto. Over the course of 12 days, over 1,200 artists participate in performances across the city that include comedy, drama, musicals, improvisation, storytelling, children’s theatre, dance and much more. Visit their website for more information.

Chitra

June 11 – Oct 8

Royal George Theatre

Presented as a part of the Shaw Festival, Chitra is about a warrior princess and a warrior hero in love. It sounds simple enough, but things are more complicated in Rabindranath Tagore’s one-act play based on a story from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. Chitra, a warrior princess raised as a boy, begs the gods for perfect beauty so she can win the affections of Arjuna. An enchanting poem of false appearance and true love.

Porch View Dances

July 8 - 17

In an interactive treasure hunt, your senses and imagination will soar throughout Seaton Village. Engage in person with live and virtual performances as our PVD tour guide escorts you to a series of interest points. Choreographed by Irma Villafuerte and Nickeshia Garrick, experiences of live dances, augmented reality (AR) and mini dance films will once again feature the heartwarming and real stories of everyday folk, funneling out the front door of neighbourhood homes onto their porches and lawns.

Short & Sweet: Toronto Edition

July 8
The Great Hall

Taking place at The Great Hall, Short&Sweet features a roster of artists, inlcuding our Artristic Director, Nova Bhattacharya, from an eclectic range of styles and aesthetics. All have the freedom to create whatever they want, as long as it is under three minutes in length! A timekeeper is present and if any artist goes over the allotted time frame, they will be cut off immediately. Join the summer fun and witness these artists try something new, take risks, and question what can be accomplished in 3 minutes. Following these enthralling performances, the night will wrap up with a wild dance party! FInd ticekts here!
