Engaging with Arts: June
Toronto summer is finally here! Celebrate with some awesome art happening in and around the city:
Nuit
June 8 – 10
Fleck Dance Theatre
Compagnie de la Citadelle remounts Nuit. Nuit is legendary Canadian choreographer Jean-Pierre Perreault’s seminal work exploring the individual among the collective through fiery, demanding contemporary dance. During the harsh night, eight performers grapple with the hurly-burly of everyday life, pushing themselves to the limit where tensions emerge and a troubling, subterranean vulnerability is expressed.
June 9 – 11
Sampradaya Dance Creations
Momentum Festival 2023 is a presentation platform to showcase the diversity and richness of South Asian dance forms and provide a platform for artists to share their artistry with Canadian audiences. The festival aims to promote cultural exchange and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of South Asian dance and culture. Momentum Festival 2023 seeks to inspire and engage audiences, celebrate the vibrancy of South Asian dance, and create a space for artists to connect and collaborate.
June 10
Museum of Contemporary Art
Join MOCA Toronto for a series of two evening performances featuring a continuing movement response to Kapwani Kiwanga’s exhibition Remediation. POLITICAL MOVEMENT, a contemporary dance theatre company, will embody elements of the exhibition in relation to the vital political, economic and social histories presented.
Exit Strategies seeks to invite audiences to both feel Kapwani Kiwanga’s artworks within their own bodies and from an embodied perspective. Through movement scored by Aria Evans, the dancers will explore themes of exploitation and acts of resistance provided by plant-life — their freedoms, their futures and their rhythms.
Carnival of Algorithmic Culture
June 23 – 24
Bodyshop Studios
Ukai Projects presents the Carnival of Algorithmic Culture! This two-day carnival will bring together researchers, artists, activists, technologists, and community members for two days of workshops, talks, exhibitions, and interactive activities in Toronto to explore the impacts of artificial intelligence on the culture we create and the cultural products to which we have access. Featuring performances, installations, talks, and workshops to soon be announced.
